The kids were asking for a “drone” for Christmas. In fact when they went to see Santa this year they asked him for one and he asked his elf in front of the kids to make one so the hand was pretty much forced into getting one.
We took a look at a few drones on the market, from cheap sub £50 toys which would just fly away in the slightest gust of wind, then came across the DJI Tello a fully functional drone which can help teach your kids to code. Find out more with our hands on review of the Tello.
Tello Drone Review
The Tello drone is marketed as: “Perform flying stunts, shoot quick videos with EZ Shots, and learn about drones with coding education. Get yourself a Tello to find out just how awesome flying a drone can be!”. We got ours direct from the manafacturer (link below) for £89. It does not come with a remote control but tethers to your Mobile phone for easy control.
Out of the box, the Tello Drone looks pretty small but dont let that decieve you, this drone packs a lot of punch. It contains a 5 megapixel camera, in built stability from DJI technology and has VR headset capabilities if you want to upgrade.
We found it super easy to setup using wifi to connect to the drone. The app to use the drone is available from your phones app shop. Once up and running everything can be controlled from your phone. The key tip we found is to be VERY sensitive with the controls to start with and ensure the propeller guards are on.
The next level with this drone is to learn some coding, using scratch – a simple programming language designed for children.
With the Tello, you have two options of control; create a pre-planned mission with actions that you can start with the touch of a button or manually control the Tello with a device in real-time.
This is a fun and unique feature for all Tello pilots that can also be used as an educational tool to build your skills in coding.
Overall we highly recommend the Tello for your kids first drone.
